On “Martyrdom”: Martyrdom in Islam Versus Suicide Bombing (Published: 18 July 2008)

Excerpt: ” If one suicide bomber can kill 100 enemy soldiers because they were caught off guard that would be considered a strategic victory. Their intention is not to die because of some despair. The same can be said for the Kamikazees in Japan. They died (via crashing their planes into ships) to kill the enemies for the homeland. You can call them crazy i you want but their act was not one of suicide that is despised by Islam. So the scholars main point is that “IT SEEMS AS THOUGH YOUR INTENTION IS THE MAIN ISSUE” and Allah (SWT) knows best.”

On non-Muslims: [HASAN]once gave a lecture to other doctors in which he said non-believers should be beheaded and have boiling oil poured down their throats. He also told colleagues at America’s top military hospital that non-Muslims were infidels condemned to hell who should be set on fire. The outburst came during an hour-long talk Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, gave on the Qu’ran in front of dozens of other doctors at Walter Reed Army Medical Centre in Washington DC during an environmental seminar in the summer of 2009.

On the meaning of Jihad: HASAN reportedly provided his interpretation of “JIHAD” at the Muslim Community Center in Silver Spring, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C., to Golam Akhter, 67, a Bangladeshi-American civil engineer, 67. Akhter stated that HASAN disagreed with his interpretation of the concept of jihad as “an inner struggle, fighting against corruption and injustice.” Instead, HASAN stated: “That’s not a correct interpretation. Jihad means holy war. When your religion isn’t safe, you have to fight for it. If someone attacks you, you must fight them. That is jihad. You can kill someone who is harming you.” Source: http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-stories/2009-11-07/major-hasans-hidden-militancy/full/ Summer of 2009

TIMELINE OF EVENTS (Abbreviated)

2001: Nidal Malik HASAN was an active member of the Dar al-Hijrah Mosque and Islamic Center in Falls Church, Virginia while stationed in the DC area in 2001. HASAN participated in mosque activities during the summer of 2001, at the same time as Nawaf al-Hamzi and Hani Hanjour, two of the 9/11 hijackers, were active members. The infamous Dar al-Hijrah Mosque has been on the radar of federal investigators and counter-terrorism investigators long before the 9/11 attacks, and has been described as a “hotbed of terrorist activity” by an FBI agent who has been involved in terrorism investigations that specifically included that mosque.

The Imam at the time of HASAN’S attendance was Anwar Nasser Aulaqi (a/k/a al-Awlaki), who aided and privately counseled at least three of the 9/11 terrorists in the months prior to the attacks, at the same time HASAN was a member there. The imam is suspected of being a key facilitator and advisor, and possibly even a surviving field commander for the 9/11 [terrorist] cell that hit the Pentagon. Investigation of 9/11 related documents indicate that at least one other 9/11 hijacker was also counseled by Al-Aulaqi while he served as a prayer leader at a San Diego, California mosque.

A federal investigator close to the HASAN investigation, interviewed by this author, stated that there is substantial evidence that HASAN “received significant and ongoing spiritual and life counseling” from the imam and terrorist facilitator “at and about the time of the death of his [HASAN"S] mother in May 2001. It is at the time of the extensive interaction with al Aulaqi that HASAN’S colleagues, friends and acquaintances began to notice a difference in HASAN’S behavior and outlook. He became a more devout Muslim, and even more antagonistic to American and Western values. Meanwhile, former Dar al Hijrah leader, also the subject of a separate federal investigation related to terrorism and money laundering known as Operation Green Quest, remains at large and currently residing in Yemen.

NOTE: HASAN had routinely visited al Qaeda and Islamic terrorist web sites in months and weeks leading to the massacre at Fort Hood. He also downloaded material from the web site operated by former Dar al Hijrah mosque leader and terrorist facilitator Anwar Nasser al Awlaki. The information obtained from HASAN’s digital files reportedly shows a “pattern of deliberate and willful planning to conduct some type of attack against the U.S. military prior to his deployment” [to Afghanistan].

January 2009: Attended lecture at George Washington University by Ambassador Sallai Meridor, who spoke about Israeli counter-terrorism efforts against homegrown, regional and international terrorist organizations. He also talked about recent conflict in Gaza in its impact on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, Israel’s response to terror attacks in Mumbai, as well as other relevant regional security issues.

Excerpted: Initiated by HSPI’s Steering Committee in Spring 2008, the Task Force sought to further policy discussions of the top strategic priorities in the area of security in order to generate actionable recommendations, for the Administration taking office in January 2009, designed to effectively meet the most vexing challenges the United States faces today.

July 2009: The subject is transferred to Fort Hood, where he rents an apartment at the Casa Del Norte Apartment complex in Killeen, Texas. At that time, HASAN requested that no one be permitted to enter his apartment for any reason, including the performance of repairs, in his absence. When he signed his lease in July 2009, HASAN paid about $1,950 in rent (six months’ rent in advance).

Source: THOMPSON, John/Alice, managers of the Casa Del Norte Apartment complex

1 August 2009: HASAN purchased a Belgian made FN Herstal 5.7 pistol at “Guns Galore” located near the Islamic Community center in Killeen, Texas. He also bought several high capacity 20 round magazines.

September 2009: HASAN began to regularly attend the Islamic Community mosque of Greater Killeen, Texas, usually wearing either his uniform or civilian clothes to prayers. He spoke with the imam there about his objection to fighting Muslims in Muslim lands. “In the Qu’ran, it says you are not supposed to have alliances with Jews or Christians, and if you are killed in the military fighting against Muslims, you will go to hell,” he is reported to have stated.

Thursday, 29 October & Friday 30 October 2009

Nidal Malik HASAN visited the Starz Strip club, located just down the road from the main gate entrance to Fort Hood. Based on information provided by club employees, HASAN sat at a table in the back corner of the club, to the left of the stage on which strippers dance around a pole According to Jennifer JENNER, a dancer using the stage name “Paige,” HASAN bought a lap dance from her two nights in a row. She said he paid $50 for a dance lasting three songs in one of the club’s private rooms

Tuesday, 3 November 2009

According to the Alice THOMPSON, 53, the manager of the apartment complex where HASAN resides, an unidentified male described as having a dark complexion, long black hair and a moustache accompanied HASAN into his apartment at approximately 4:00 PM CT. The unidentified visitor was “dressed in full Muslim attire” and stayed at the apartment for about five-(5) minutes. As of this profile report, that visitor has not been publicly identified.

Wednesday, 4 November 2009

As reported by the London Telegraph, HASAN began to give away his personal possessions to his neighbors.

Thursday, 5 November 2009

Imam Syed Ahmed Ali said Nidal Malik Hasan usually worn his uniform or civilian clothes to prayers, but on Thursday, he attended in his full robe.

Wednesday, 6 November 2009

Shortly after 9:00 am CT, HASAN began to bid farewell to some of his neighbors, including Patricia VILLA, 47. As reported in the London Telegraph, HASAN knocked on her door and offered her food items, shirts and gave her a copy of the Qu’ran. He gave two other neighbors Qu’rans as well, requesting each recipient to read the Qu’ran.

Thursday, 7 November 2009

5.30 am: HASAN left his apartment and proceeded to the Islamic Community of Greater Killeen, for pre-dawn “Fajr prayers.” Although HASAN usually wore either his uniform or civilian clothes, he attended prayers in full Islamic attire - a white Arab dishdash and skull cap.

6:15 am: HASAN departs the mosque, traveling to a nearby Seven-Eleven convenience store where he was caught on closed circuit surveillance cameras purchasing his usual breakfast of coffee and hash browns. He appeared friendly and relaxed as he walked through the store in his Islamic attire, even joking briefly with the store owner - also a Muslim.

8.30 am: HASAN is observed carrying trash bags from his apartment to a dumpster located behind his apartment.

At some point before noon, HASAN changed out of his Muslim garb and into his military uniform and drove to Fort Hood, taking with him two guns: the FN 5.7 millimeter and a revolver.

After 1:00 pm, HASAN entered the Soldier Readiness Center where about 300 soldiers were waiting for their previously scheduled medical exams and vaccinations. All were unarmed.

1:20 pm: Based on eyewitness reports, HASAN stood on the top of a table, shouted “Allahu Akhbar” and began firing at soldiers and civilians. During the massacre, HASAN fired more than 100 rounds. HASAN kills 14 (a number that includes one unborn child) and wounds 30 more. Others are being treated for stress-related problems.

3:30 pm: The FBI begins their investigation at HASAN’s residence, searching his apartment and interviewing neighbors. The on-site investigation continues throughout Thursday and into Friday.

Investigative Remarks

The information contained within this profile summary of Nidal Malik HASAN is not complete, nor is it intended or represented to be. There are numerous other events, associations and activities in connection with HASAN that have been purposely omitted as they are completely unsubstantiated and remain under investigation, or to reveal them here could potentially jeopardize the formal investigation being conducted by authorities.

It is this investigator’s professional opinion that the information submitted herein is sufficient prima facie evidence to illustrate that the actions of Nidal HASAN were the direct result of his adherence to Islamic legal teachings and sanctioned by such doctrine. There is also sufficient evidence that HASAN sought and received inspirational assistance by known terrorist facilitators. As such, it is reasonable to suspect that there are others who knew of HASAN’s plans in advance of his actions.

Further, sufficient warning signs to indicate a perilous rogue element existed within the very ranks of the military, in the form of Nidal HASAN, presented themselves on several occasions, to such an extent that they should have been reported given the events of 9/11 and subsequent “fragging” incidents by Muslim military personnel. One can only wonder if they would have been acted upon, given the historical and current political climate that exists pertaining to this issue.

Perhaps the most important report warning about the threat posed by Nidal HASAN was written over two years ago, and submitted to high ranking officers in the U.S. Military. Unfortunately, that warning was largely ignored and was never acted upon.

Major Stephen Coughlin worked on a subcontracting basis at the Pentagon and is considered an expert on Islam. He authored a 333 research paper that was published in 2007 titled To Our Great Detriment. The information contained in that report is extensive and invaluable in addressing the extent of the threat we face as a nation from Islamic terrorism. It is a completely unbiased research product that investigates all sides of the threat.

The Northeast Intelligence Network wrote extensively about Major Coughlin and this report after his services were terminated by the Pentagon after he submitted this report. It appears that his findings were not diplomatically acceptable, although this is mere speculation on the part of this investigator.

The report by Major Coughlin must be read in its entirety to understand not only the threat posed by Nidal HASAN and others like him, but that threat continues to exist despite the murderous events of last week.

One of many relevant aspects of this report apply to U.S. military policy on Islam, and appears to eerily serve as a warning that should have identified HASAN as the threat he became had this report been honestly considered. In closing, this investigator cites the discussion from pages 226-228 of that report:

From the earliest Islamic legal authorities to modern American 7th grade school texts on Islam, it turns out that all agree that Islam is a complete way of life governed by Islamic law. There was nothing to indicate that there are recognized forms of Islam that are not governed by Islamic law. The national constitutions of most Muslim countries, and all Arab countries surveyed, formally reflect this subordination. All the Islamic authorities identified jihad as a duty incumbent on all Muslims at the communal and individual levels. When the authorities spoke to Islamic law of jihad, its meaning was limited to that of warfare against non-Muslims to establish the religion. Because this finding is in line with Quranic verses from surahs from the later periods of revelation, it reflects abrogation’s doctrinal influence on Islamic law. Because jihad’s legal status reflects scholarly consensus, it means that the rules of jihad as stated in Islamic law are absolute and hence cannot be contravened or annulled.

Hence, if Islamic law is to serve as the measure, and there is no doctrinal basis to argue that it should not, there may not be an Islam that is not under obligation of jihad that remains in force until the world has been claimed for Islam. As Qur’an Verse 2: 216 suggests,438 the requirements of jihad are objective and do not appear to be sensitive to the personal preferences of believers. As al-Shafi’i stated in his Risala, a duty of jihad arises when one learns that it is a requirement. Hence, education on jihad seems to be pegged to the capabilities of Islam to carry the requirements forward. This conforms to concepts of progressive revelation that “extremists” like Sayyid Qutb emulate when templating their “extremist” ideology.

Under the Current Approach, this entire line of inquiry has been effectively shut down by objections that do not extend beyond surface assertions that “Islam does not stand for this” or “there are a thousand different interpretations of Islamic law” (so what’s the point in looking?). The consequences of uncritically heeding this advice have been the ongoing failure to understand the nature of the enemy. “Extremists” state that they fight jihad in furtherance of Islamic causes. This fact remains true regardless of whether the enemy is ultimately correct in its understanding of Islam. Hence, there are Islamic drivers to the WOT that simply must be taken into account when developing the doctrinal template of the enemy. Failure to account for Islamic law will result in a failure to recognize the laws of jihad that the enemy consciously emulates. When a doctrinal template fails to account for legal doctrines of jihad that the enemy self-identifies as the basis of his doctrine, the resulting enemy COAs will be fatally flawed as will be the ensuing friendly COAs.

Recalling that the disclosure of any information about Islam or Muslims that would cause a non-Muslim to question Islam violates strict Islamic laws on slander, it may help to explain why those beholden to such a standard could earnestly insist that “Islam has nothing to do with it” in the face of evidence that would normally argue otherwise in other circumstances. Because a slander concerning Islam can easily qualify as an insult to Islam, the consequences, as noted earlier, can be severe.

This would be true even if the slander was factually accurate. This may help explain why the writing of a thesis such as this could lead to strong accusations that it is either an insult or slander to Islam even when every point asserted is verified and validated. Either way, choosing to ignore the information that lies beneath the surface of such claims is to submit the information that drives decision making and analysis to the disclosure requirements of Islamic law. This is submission.

Enforcing such a prior constraint on information flows is fundamentally inconsistent with IPB processes that demand unconstrained access to all relevant data, including that data that some would rather remain beneath the surface. The Current Approach constrains because it was designed to do so. IPB runs on unconstrained flows of information. Hence, the two processes are mutually exclusive. Given both our inability to develop a descriptively accurate understanding of the nature of the enemy and our broad frustration with the current state of affairs in the WOT, it may be time to ponder deeply what was meant when Majid Khadduri said that “the universality of Islam, in all its embracing creed, is imposed on all believers as a continuous process of warfare, psychological and political if not strictly military” that Pakistani Brigadier S. K. Malik said was the point where Quranic concepts of war are won — at the war of will phase.

To break from the slow submission cycle that leads to the destruction of our confidence, a recommitment to a process driven by facts along with an associated commitment to ruthlessly go wherever those facts may take us is recommended. With IPB, we already have a methodology capable of taking us down that path.

Source reveals political agenda as cause for not disclosing HASAN’S activities to Military authorities

By Douglas J. Hagmann, Director

9 November 2009: According to an intelligence source speaking to the Northeast Intelligence Network, forensic analysis of Nidal Malik HASAN’s computer and other media determined that HASAN had routinely visited al Qaeda and Islamic terrorist web sites in months and weeks leading to last week’s massacre at Fort Hood. According to this investigative source, HASAN also downloaded material from the web site operated by former Dar al Hijrah mosque leader and terrorist facilitator Anwar Nasser al Awlaki. As reported here, al Awlaki was an imam at the Dar al Hijrah mosque in Fall Church, Virginia in 2001, where he advised and facilitated two of the 9/11 terrorists in the months prior to the attacks. Al Awlaki also counseled HASAN during that same period.

The information obtained from HASAN’s digital files reportedly shows a “pattern of deliberate and willful planning to conduct some type of attack against the U.S. military prior to his deployment” [to Afghanistan], stated this source who requested anonymity as he is not authorized to speak publicly. “The motive behind the massacre appears to be rooted in his ideology, an ideology which was emboldened by online activity,” added this source.

As indicated by a ABC News Online article, intelligence sources reportedly had a level of knowledge that HASAN was in communication with al Qaeda assets abroad. The source speaking to this author confirmed that report but went further, stating that this and information similar but not directly related to such communications became a “political issue” between government agencies and officials “at the policy making levels” of the administration.

According to this source, the now infamous pre-9/11 walls erected within government agencies have returned, “but this time they are higher and stronger.” “There is an unwillingness to address ‘delicate’ intelligence and security matters by sharing information outside of the beltway, and that directive comes right from the top. That’s all I’m going to say right now,” stated this source.

Based on the information provided during this interview, it would appear that intelligence officials were well aware of not only HASAN’s prior associations with known Muslim terrorists, but his current sympathy with anti-American, pro-jihad, al Qaeda ideology and his views about the U.S. military engaging the enemy on Muslim soil.

Nidal Malik HASAN received "spiritual counseling and life advice" from same imam who counseled at least three of the 9/11 hijackers

By Douglas J. Hagmann, Director

8 November 2009: As noted by this author in the initial background profile published just hours after the Ft. Hood massacre here, Nidal Malik HASAN was an active member of the Dar al-Hijrah Mosque and Islamic Center in Falls Church, Virginia while stationed in the area in 2001. HASAN participated in mosque activities during the summer of 2001, at the same time as Nawaf al-Hamzi and Hani Hanjour, two of the 9/11 hijackers, were active members. The infamous Dar al-Hijrah Mosque has been on the radar of federal investigators and counter-terrorism investigators long before the 9/11 attacks, and has been described as a “hotbed of terrorist activity” by an FBI agent who has been involved in terrorism investigations that specifically included that mosque.[1]

Other terrorist luminaries, including Sheikh Mohammed al-Hanooti, an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, previously served as a prayer leader at Dar la-Hijrah. Other notable former mosque members include HAMAS leader Mousa Abu Marzook, Abdurahman Alamoudi, Randall “Ismail” Royer (former officials of the Council on American Islamic Relations), Ismail Elbarasse, al Qaeda operative Ahmed Omar Abu Ali, and Abdullah bin Laden, Osama bin Laden’s nephew.

It’s Imam at the time of HASAN’S attendance was Anwar Nasser Aulaqi (a/k/a al-Awlaki), who aided and privately counseled at least three of the 9/11 terrorists in the months prior to the attacks, at the same time HASAN was a member there. The imam is suspected of being a key facilitator and advisor, and possibly even a surviving field commander for the 9/11 [terrorist] cell that hit the Pentagon.[2] Investigation of 9/11 related documents indicate that at least one other 9/11 hijacker was also counseled by Al-Aulaqi while he served as a prayer leader at a San Diego, California mosque.

A federal investigator close to the HASAN investigation, interviewed by this author late yesterday, stated that there is substantial evidence that HASAN “received significant and ongoing spiritual and life counseling” from the imam and terrorist facilitator “at and about the time of the death of his [HASAN"S] mother in May 2001.

It was revealed that Nidal Malik HASAN was on the radar of authorities at least six months prior to Thursday’s shooting, as a result of his published writings advocating the strategic importance of homicide bombings. While those missives alone should have been sufficient to remove HASAN from his position within the U.S. military, the most basic of background investigations would have revealed HASAN’s direct connection to a key terrorist facilitator and interaction with at least two of the 9/11 hijackers.

The question is why nothing was done.

By Douglas J. Hagmann, Director

7 November 2009: Consider this: the murderous actions of Nidal Malik HASAN at Ft. Hood on Thursday resulted in more deaths and injuries in that single attack than in 15 years of violence at abortion clinics in the U.S. and Canada. Two days after the bloodbath at Ft. Hood, government officials from the President to local politicians, the media, their pundits and other experts are publicly cautioning against linking any religious or ideological motives to the actions of Nidal Malik HASAN.

Immediately after the murder of Dr. George Tiller, a noted abortionist at a women’s clinic in Wichita, Kansas on May 31, 2009 and the subsequent arrest of “anti-abortion extremist Scott Roeder,” however, the motives behind the killing of Dr. Tiller were never questioned. Those same politicians and pundits who are currently urging the public not to jump to the conclusion that HASAN’s motives were religious and ideological in nature are the same who immediately concluded that the murder of Dr. Tiller was a result of an anti-abortion extremist.

The blatant hypocrisy does not end there.

Immediately after the arrest of Roeder, some politicians and media pundits declared that the murderous actions of Roeder and all other acts of violence against abortion clinics were fueled by conservative talk show hosts. Those who did not outright advocate some form of censorship of conservative talk radio demanded oversight and accountability to insure that the masses would not be whipped into unrestrained frenzy.

Yet, no one in the media is calling for the same oversight and accountability for the fiery and arguably seditious sermons being delivered at mosques in the U.S. and Canada. Agendas have never been more obvious.

Allowing Muslims to serve in the U.S. military in 2009 makes as much sense as if we would have allowed Nazi's to serve in our armed forces in 1939.

By Douglas J. Hagmann, Director

6 November 2009: The shooting attack at Ft. Hood Thursday by a Muslim soldier is anything but an isolated incident. It is the latest in a series of attacks by Muslim soldiers who have violated their oath to protect and defend this country, instead placing their allegiance in the religion, culture and political system known as Islam. Even if it is ultimately determined that Nidal Malik HASAN was the sole perpetrator in this mass murder, there are co-conspirators.

The co-conspirators are each and every politician, policymaker and pundit who has force-fed the American people the lie that Islam “is a religion of peace” or is a “religion hijacked. Whether it is for the shallow purposes of political expediency, political correctness or just plain naiveté, those who espouse and advance this perilous view have their share of innocent blood on their hands.

The latest murderous rampage should be sufficient to illustrate that Islam is totally incompatible with freedom, democracy and Western culture. Faced with the choice between upholding their oath to the United States and advancing Islam by any means possible, it will always be the latter. As soon as people begin to understand and accept this concept, we can better secure our homeland and lower the potential body count of innocent men, women and children.

There are some who contend - with a straight face, no less - that “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder” (PTSD) might be the cause for HASAN’s murder spree. The only “stressors” in this case would result from attempting to reconcile the irreconcilable.

If the mass murder at Ft. Hood yesterday is not convincing enough, how about the March 23, 2003 grenade attack by Muslim Sgt. Hasan Karim Akbar that killed Army Captain Christopher Seifert and Air Force Major Gregory Stone and wounded 14 others? Or the June 1st, 2009 shooting attack at the Little Rock recruiting center by 23 year-old Muslim Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad, who killed two officers?

Of course, the treachery is not just limited to murder. While serving as a naval signalman on board the USS Benfoldin the months following the attack on the USS Cole, Hassan Abujihaad (a/k/a Paul R. Hall) actively provided Islamic terrorists with sensitive information about the location of Navy ships and their weaknesses. He also discussed sniper attacks on military personnel and attacks on U.S. military recruitment sites with Muslim terrorists as well. For his crimes, Abujihaad is currently serving a ten-(10) year sentence.

There is also U.S. Army captain James “Yousef” LEE, the former Muslim chaplain charged with espionage while serving at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. YEE was arrested at a U.S. airport on charges of espionage after he was caught in possession of detailed maps of the detention facility along with other classified materials. In addition to YEE, two other Islamic Arabic translators stationed at Guantanamo were convicted of unauthorized possession of classified documents.

Ultimately, the U.S. Army opted not to proceed with the espionage charges against YEE due to national security concerns arising from the evidence that would be made available to the public at the trial.Nonetheless, the facts are the facts.

The common thread here is Islam. Allowing Muslims to serve in the U.S. military in 2009 makes as much sense as if we would have allowed Nazi’s to serve in our armed forces in 1939. It would have been lunacy then, and its lunacy now.

Apparently, the wholesale murder of nearly 3,000 people on 9/11 by Muslim terrorists and the 14,000 terrorist attacks since by Muslim terrorists is not enough to compel politicians or pundits to admit the obvious. It is unlikely that another dozen or so victims will either.

Akbar was charged in a hand grenade and shooting attack that killed Army Captain Christopher Seifert and Air Force Major Gregory Stone of the 327th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, while wounding 14 other soldiers on March 23, 2003. He was convicted of two counts of premeditated murder and three counts of attempted premeditated murder on April 21, 2005. Notably, during his trial Akbar smuggled scissors out of a conference room, then asked the Military Police Officer guarding him to remove his hand cuffs so he could use the restroom. When the officer removed Akbar’s restraints, he stabbed the officer in the neck and shoulder before being wrestled to the ground by another officer.

He was sentenced to death on April 28, the jury deliberating for around 7 hours. Following an appeal by Akbar, Lieutenant General John Vines, commander of the 18th Airborne Corps, affirmed the death sentence against Akbar on November 20, 2006. News report

James Yousef LEE

Remember U.S. Army captain James “Yousef” LEE, the former Muslim chaplain charged with espionage while serving at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba? YEE was arrested at a U.S. airport on charges of espionage after he was caught in possession of detailed maps of the detention facility along with other classified materials. In addition to YEE, two other Arabic translators stationed at Guantanamo were also convicted of unauthorized possession of classified documents.

Ultimately, the U.S. Army opted not to proceed with the espionage charges against YEE due to national security concerns arising from the evidence that would be made available to the public at the trial.

5 November 2009: A directive labeled “For Official Use Only” was issued to U.S. military bases, operation centers, and other potential targets of terror attacks by US Northern Command’s (NORTHCOM) Joint Operations Center commander General Victor E. Renuart, Jr., in September. General Renuart is also Commander NORAD. General Renuart’s directive was issued as a result of recently thwarted domestic Islamic bombing plots, including plots specifically targeting U.S. military installations, and directed all domestic U.S. military installations to re-evaluate their internal security.

According to General Renuart, the present and most pressing problem facing NORTHCOM is the vulnerability of U.S. facilities to attack and complacency. He stressed that the US military must become smarter at providing security to its bases, noting that the threat to US military installations is real. The directive is summarized in an article at this link.
